527 Political group — A generally shady part of the political machine, the groups are named for the tax code that makes them tax exempt; always partisan, they are "independent" and not supposed to specifically advocate a candidate, but they find ways to do it anyway; two that you've probably heard of: Swift Boat Veterans for Truth and MoveOn.org.
